TraneThermal Industry Applications

Application-specific HVAC and refrigeration solutions for six core sectors where thermal reliability is non-negotiable.

Data center cooling solutions

Data Centers

Hyperscale and colocation facilities demand 99.999% uptime with increasing power density per rack. TraneThermal delivers chilled water systems achieving PUE below 1.2, with N+1 redundancy and free cooling economizers for temperate climates.

PUE 1.15 Best Achieved
50 MW Largest Installation
N+1 Redundancy Standard

Project Reference: Southeast Asia Colocation Facility

A 15 MW colocation data center in Singapore required chilled water cooling capable of maintaining 22 degrees C supply air temperature at 95% relative humidity ambient conditions. TraneThermal deployed 6 x 750 TR water-cooled centrifugal chillers with variable-speed drives in an N+1 configuration, integrated with a waterside economizer for the 800 hours per year when wet-bulb temperature drops below 18 degrees C. The completed system achieved PUE 1.18, delivering 12% lower energy consumption than the client's baseline design using constant-speed chillers.

Pharmaceutical HVAC

Pharmaceutical & Life Sciences

GMP-compliant HVAC systems maintaining ISO Class 5-8 cleanroom conditions. Our solutions address stringent temperature control within plus/minus 0.5 degrees C, humidity control, and positive/negative pressure cascades required for API manufacturing and sterile fill facilities.

  • FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant monitoring and documentation
  • HEPA-integrated air handling units with heat recovery
  • Validated temperature mapping and IQ/OQ/PQ support

Project Reference: European API Manufacturing Facility

A pharmaceutical company in Basel, Switzerland required HVAC upgrades for a 4,200 m2 cleanroom suite producing injectable APIs under EU GMP Annex 1 conditions. TraneThermal supplied four air handling units with HEPA filtration and heat recovery wheels, plus two 200 TR water-cooled scroll chillers providing chilled water at 6/12 degrees C. The system maintained ISO Class 7 conditions with temperature stability within plus/minus 0.3 degrees C across all zones. Energy consumption decreased 22% compared to the previous constant-volume system through variable air volume controls and chiller sequencing optimization.

Food & Beverage refrigeration

Food & Beverage Processing

From dairy pasteurization to blast freezing, our process cooling systems maintain HACCP-compliant temperature chains. Ammonia/CO2 cascade systems deliver maximum efficiency for large cold stores, while glycol loop systems serve distributed process cooling needs.

  • HACCP-compatible equipment design with stainless steel construction
  • Blast freezing from +20 degrees C to -35 degrees C in under 4 hours
  • Ammonia systems with leak detection and emergency ventilation

Project Reference: Midwest Frozen Food Processing Plant

A frozen food manufacturer in Iowa required a new blast freezing line capable of reducing product core temperature from +20 degrees C to -18 degrees C within 3 hours for a throughput of 8 tons per hour. TraneThermal designed an ammonia/CO2 cascade refrigeration system with the low-stage CO2 circuit operating at -45 degrees C evaporating temperature. The cascade design achieved a system COP of 1.8 at the design condition, 15% higher than a comparable single-stage ammonia system, while reducing total ammonia charge from 4,500 kg to 800 kg by confining ammonia to the high-stage circuit in the machine room.

Application Design Constraints

Successful HVAC and refrigeration installations require accounting for site-specific constraints. The following factors frequently affect system selection and sizing across our core industries.

Environmental & Regulatory Constraints

  • Ammonia systems require dedicated machine rooms with emergency ventilation per ASHRAE 15, adding 10-15% to installation cost
  • Noise ordinances in urban areas may restrict air-cooled condenser placement; sound attenuators add 5-8 dB(A) reduction at additional cost
  • Water-cooled systems in drought-prone regions face water use restrictions that may mandate closed-loop dry coolers despite efficiency penalties

Performance & Maintenance Boundaries

  • Glycol concentrations above 35% reduce heat transfer coefficient by 15-20%, requiring oversized heat exchangers for freeze protection below -15 degrees C
  • Heat exchanger fouling factors must be accounted for in initial sizing; plate heat exchangers require cleaning every 12-18 months in hard water applications
  • Transcritical CO2 systems operating above 90 bar design pressure require ASME Section VIII or PED-certified components, limiting vendor options and increasing lead times
