What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals—right-sizing, installation quality, preventive maintenance—haven't collapsed. But execution has transformed. Controlled air balancing, variable capacity, and smarter heat pump designs have changed the decision criteria.

As of January 2025, the refrigerant world is still moving through the federal phasedown. If I buy a chiller that can't be responsibly serviced in five years, I haven't saved money. I've booked a future emergency. That's why I update my procurement standards every year. It's not trendy. It's procurement hygiene.

What if you don't have the budget for a premium system?

This is where I lose some people. If the only number that matters is the purchase order total, a Trane heating system may not be the right answer. I've approved cheaper alternatives when the capital budget was fixed and the owner understood the trade-off. That's not a betrayal. It's a decision.

Looking back, I should have insisted that one of those cheaper chiller quotes include a 10-year compressor warranty. At the time, the price difference looked like easy savings. It wasn't.
