When I took over facility equipment purchasing in 2022, I figured the smartest move was to standardize on one fan type—make inventory simple, keep vendors happy. Axial fans were cheap, duct fans were everywhere, and everyone told me centrifugal was for "serious" applications. So I picked axial. Big mistake.

Axial fans move massive air volumes at low pressure—ideal for wall exhaust or ventilation. I ordered 20 axial fans for our warehouse ceiling: cheap, high CFM, easy install. But the noise was brutal. Our operations team complained within a week. Even with variable speed drives, the blade-tone whine drove people nuts. Everything I'd read said axial was the workhorse. Turns out workhorses are loud.
The conventional wisdom is that axial fans are 'simple and rugged.' My experience? They're simple, yes, but you'd better have plenty of acoustic treatment or a very tolerant workforce.
I swapped four of those axials for a different design—backward curved centrifugal fans (sometimes called plug fans when mounted in a housing). Never expected the difference to be so stark. Quieter, higher static pressure capability, and efficiency that actually improved with higher resistance. The surprise wasn't the price jump. It was how much that extra cost bought in real-world performance.
But—and this is the honest limitation part—backward curved fans are bigger. They need proper duct transitions, a solid mounting frame, and enough space that our smaller mechanical rooms couldn't fit them. For those tight spots, I had to look elsewhere.
For our office's fan coil units, tangential fans (aka cross flow fans) were the only option. They're thin, quiet at low speed, and move air across a wide, rectangular outlet. But ask them to push against any significant backpressure and they stall. Not ideal for ductwork—but perfect for cassette units.
Duct fans? Those inline models that mount inside round ducts—they're great for boosting airflow in long runs, but they add a whine that's impossible to silence without expensive attenuators. I've stopped using them in occupied zones unless absolutely necessary.
Last year we had a vendor consolidation project. The procurement team suggested picking a single fan type to simplify contracts. I pushed back—hard. If we'd standardized on only tangentials, we couldn't serve the warehouse. If we'd gone all backward curved centrifugal, the office units wouldn't fit. So next time someone asks for 'the best fan type,' I'm not giving them a one-word answer. I'm asking: what's your pressure target? How much space do you have? How quiet does it need to be? And what are you willing to compromise on? That honest conversation saves more money—and frustration—than any 'perfect' product ever could.
