I'm a procurement manager at a 40-person HVAC contracting company. I've managed our equipment and parts budget for six years and negotiated with more vendors than I can count. If the return path is blocked, if ductwork is leaky, or if static pressure is wrong, the unit can run all day and still not satisfy the thermostat. That is not a Trane problem. This is the part that surprised me. The deeper cause is rarely one component. It's a system that doesn't behave the way the equipment expects.
Cost is where I live. Let me give you a real example from our own order history, not an industry average.

That mindset has saved us more money than any discount we negotiated with a supplier.
None of this is an anti-Trane piece. We standardize on Trane equipment for many jobs because reliability and parts availability keep our operating costs predictable when the installation is right.
But I'm not going to pretend Trane can fix a building. If a house leaks air or a basement pulls moisture from the ground, no air handler or dehumidifier alone will solve that. A vendor who says 'this is outside our scope, here is who we'd call' earns more trust than one who claims 'we can handle everything.'
Per FTC advertising guidelines at ftc.gov, claims about efficiency or performance need to be truthful and substantiated. That's a useful rule for all of us. Don't tell a customer 'this will cut your energy bill by half' unless you have data. Say 'we will measure the condition, find the actual problem, and then fix what needs fixing.' It doesn't sound as exciting in a proposal, but it looks better in a callback log.
This approach worked for our company, but our situation is specific: mid-size, mostly retrofit work, and a customer base that values straight answers over promises. If you're doing new construction, large commercial work, or a different climate, your mileage may vary. I can only speak to what I've tracked in our own invoices, not to a secret industry rule book.
