An outdoor heater is designed to radiate heat into open air, not to run in an enclosed space with a concrete slab bleeding out heat and an aluminum door leaking air.
What most people don't realize—and I include myself here—is that a garage is not a room. It's an unconditioned space with a concrete slab that acts as a heat sink, a metal door with a low R-value, and cracks around every penetration. According to ACCA Manual J (ANSI/ACCA 2-2014), the residential load calculation standard, that space has a heat load very different from the insulated room next to it. Skip that calculation and you're guessing. You can guess correctly sometimes. I wasn't one of those times.
While I was solving the heater problem, the client asked about the freezer that had started to warm up. It had a sticker that said "garage ready." I made the same mistake a second time: I assumed the label meant it could sit anywhere in a garage. A garage ready freezer is a freezer rated for a wider ambient temperature range than a standard unit. Standard freezers are usually rated for indoor spaces around 32°F–90°F. Garage-ready models from different manufacturers handle different lows—some down to 0°F, some only to 32°F—so you have to check the data plate.
This particular unit's data plate said 32°F minimum. The garage dropped into the low 20s. The compressor oil thickened, the overload tripped, and the freezer began losing temperature. The freezer wasn't broken. It was outside its design envelope—exactly like the outdoor heater.
Here's what the project cost me and the client, roughly: First outdoor heater restocking fee, $97. Wrong Trane heater parts order, $340. Two service calls for short-cycling, $720. Freezer compressor service, $1,150. Change orders from the delayed schedule, $2,100. I want to say the total was around $4,400, but don't quote me on the exact breakdown. What I remember clearly is the credibility damage: the client started questioning every decision after the second failure. At least, that's been my experience with residential garage additions; commercial projects are even less forgiving.
